The Dorothy Quick Senior Center was slated to close its doors for good at the end of September. The center didn't have enough money to keep the doors open. The senior center receives $21,000 in funding from Dothan, but the center needed $12,000 more to continue serving the seniors this year.

Dorothy Quick board members asked the city for additional funding, but the city refused. Instead  commissioner Hamp Baxley and  mayor Mike Schimtz helped the center find private donors.

Baxley said, "Unfortunately as the city we can't just pay out every single time a nonprofit has a short fall but we were able to arrange private funding for them, which really helped them out a good bit."

Dorothy Quick participants like 92-year-old Ernest Williams said this is good news.

"I enjoy coming to Dorothy Quick because it gives my wife and me a chance to get out with others and  fellowship," said Williams.

The senior center operates out of Evergreen Presbyterian Church.
