Discussions to Tweak the Playoff System

After approving the new postseason college football playoff plan in June, conference commissioners are now considering adding another game into the rotation for the semifinals.

The plan that was approved had six rotating bowl sites for the national semifinals. When a bowl is not in the rotation, it will play host to marquee games with highly ranked teams playing in them.

There is still much to be worked out before the playoff system goes into effect in 2014, such as the selection committee that will pick what teams will participate in the playoffs, the sites of the first championship game, and how the revenue will be distributed.

The consideration of adding another game in the rotation will allow for a team that does not make the playoffs the opportunity to play in a high profile game.

A name for the playoff format has yet to be determined with the first championship game 28 months away. The main focus at the moment is getting television contracts and determining the site of the games. The process of selecting the sites will be similar to that which is used to determine the Final Four.

The three games that have already been determined to be a part of the rotation are the Rose Bowl, the Orange Bowl, and the new bowl game that will be played between the Big 12 and the Southeastern Conference. Other leading candidates are the Superdome and Dallas Cowboys Stadium.
