Madge Phillips Fleming

Madge Phillips Fleming, a resident of Huntsville, Alabama, formerly of Shorterville, died early Wednesday morning, September 19, 2012, at the home of her son, Allan Fleming, in Huntsville. She was 94.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday, September 21, 2012, in the Shorterville Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Mike Lee officiating and a eulogy to be given by a cousin, Robert E. Phillips, Jr. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the mortuary in Abbeville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shorterville Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Rossie Money, 2457 County Road 91, Abbeville, AL. 36310.

Mrs. Fleming was born and reared near Shorterville, daughter of the late Thomas Newton Phillips and Ruby Otis Grace Phillips. She lived all her life in Shorterville before moving to Huntsville in 2012. Mrs. Fleming was a member of the Shorterville Baptist Church and its W.M.U. and also formerly taught Primary and Youth Sunday School Classes, and in earlier years, enjoyed singing in the choir. She also served as a volunteer with the Senior Citizen Group in Henry County.

Upon the death of her husband, Bryant Fleming, in 1970, Mrs. Fleming was appointed to fill his unexpired term as Tax Assessor of Henry County. She was later elected and served two terms as Tax Assessor. Mrs. Fleming was a member of the Association of Alabama Tax Administrators. In earlier years, she was employed by WestPoint Stevens.

The joy and happiness in her life was rooted in her love for the Lord, and her home and family, which she cherished deeply.She had a humble and sacrificial heart that always sought to put the needs of others first.Her legacy of faith family and love for others will live on the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.

Mrs. Fleming is also preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Fleming Carter, son-in-law, Merlyn Carter, two sisters, Jeanelle Phillips and Edna Grace Phillips Bryan and two brothers, Earnest Phillips and her twin brother, Maynard Phillips.

Surviving relatives include two sons, Allan Fleming and wife, Pam, Huntsville, AL; and Gary Fleming and wife, Suzanne, Eufaula, AL; a brother, Gene Otis Phillips and wife, Gerri, New Brockton; a sister-in-law, Bobbye Phillips, Shorterville; eight grandchildren, Darlene Carter Morr (David), Kristie Carter Allums (Terry), Mickie Carter Mobley (John), Courtney Fleming Stephens (Clint), Brooks Fleming (Cathy), Elicia Fleming Fecik (Bob), Jeremy Fleming (Katie) and Jonathan Fleming; eighteen great-grandchildren, a great-great-granddaughter; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers are grandsons and great-grandsons, Brooks Fleming, Jeremy Fleming, Jonathan Fleming, Brock Price, Brandon Allums, Jarred Wofford and Alex Roskam.
