Troy
(5-4-1) was defeated by Mercer (6-3-1), 4-1, on Sunday afternoon.
Chelsey Williams scored the Trojans' lone goal on the day.
"We
had the run of play quite a bit of the game," said head coach Chris
Bentley. "They scored against run of play. We created some problems
for ourselves."
The
Bears took the lead midway through the first half, scoring two goals
over a 2:14 span. Casey Barrett fired a shot in from the right corner
of the box that took
a deflection off a Trojan defender before trickling past Maddie Winter
in the 23rd minute. Nadja Kolliesuah doubled the lead in the 25th, as
Barrett found her streaking through the middle for her first goal of the
season.
Williams
got the Trojans on the board in the 35th minute, converting on a corner
kick. Cecilia Thorngren sent in the cross that found its way to
Williams on the back
post. Williams' initial shot hit the left post, but she buried the
rebound to cut the lead to 2-1.
Mercer grew the lead to 4-1 in the second half, again scoring twice in just over two minutes.
The Trojans are back in action on Friday, September 21, when they host Florida Atlantic at 3:00 p.m. at the Troy Soccer Complex.
