Many Americans spent Tuesday reflecting on the tragic events of 9/11--- others were out serving in the community as a part of National Day of Service. Wiregrass volunteers used the service day as way to help Abbeville resident, Gregory Porter get one step closer to home ownership.

Through the Wiregrass Habitat for Humanity Porter is getting a new home on Crawford Street and volunteers spent Tuesday making it all possible. Porter said he needs the home more than ever since he has ailing health problems.  Porter's leg was amputated in 2008 due to complications with Diabetes.

Porter now relies on a wheelchair and a cane to get around, but getting around  his mobile home that isn't  wheelchair accessible is difficult.

"The mobile home is four feet off the ground and I got a lot of steps to go up. It's just hard to get up and down those steps with one leg," explained Porter.

A brighter day is on the horizon for Porter and his family. His new home is near completion. Tuesday volunteers put shingles on the roof of Porter's home.

Volunteers included police officers, fire fighters, veterans, and Dothan Police officer. Lieutenant Brian Cherry took Tuesday off to help with Habitat project.

Cherry said, "It means a lot to give back today in remembrance of 9/11. We're here helping someone gain a new home. "

Throughout the work day volunteers stopped for a moment of silence in remembrance of the event that unfolded on 9/11.
