Updated: July 31, 2012

Dothan mayor Mike Schmitz will undergo shoulder surgery following an accident involving an all terrain vehicle which occurred in Idaho.

Schmitz, who was first elected three years ago, reportedly suffered a broken collarbone and rib injuries in the accident which occurred while he was vacationing with his family in Idaho. Schmitz returned to Dothan to receive treatment.

His wife, Sandy, said the surgery will be performed Wednesday morning.  "He's in pain but, as always, his attitude is great," she said in a text message to WDHN.  Schmitz is expected to be released as soon as Thursday.

Schmitz is an avid outdoors man and, among other things, rode a bicycle on a coast to coast trip a few years ago.

He is expected to be released in a few days.
