Mobile Reject Tougher Smoking Restrictions

By: Stephen Crews
Updated: July 11, 2012
New stricter smoking bans are being passed in cities around Alabama, but Mobile is bucking that trend.

A smoking ban proposal in Mobile needed five votes for approval, but it got just four votes.

The vote came after about two hours of discussion.  The debate even touched on whether greasy fried chicken is a bigger contributor to heart disease than smoking.

The president of the Mobile County Public Health Board says the group will continue its efforts to reduce the threat from second-hand smoke.
