Irene Patricia Haglund was born on November 4, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois. Her happy, family-oriented life ended at the age of 89 on May 26, 2012 after a brief illness.
With her husband William L., the Haglunds had three offspring: William (Karen), Enterprise, AL, Thomas, Blandisville, IL, and Timothy who preceded his parents in death. Two grandchildren, Elizabeth Hammond (Grant), Brentwood, TN, Billy Haglund (Jessica), Enterprise, AL; three great-grandchildren, Woods Hammond, Brentwood, TN, Samuel and Madison Haglund, Enterprise, were the apples of Irene's eye.
Irene was the fifth of seven children born to John and Margaret McManmon, both of whom left Ireland at the turn of the 20th century to settle in Chicago. One surviving sister, Therese Brady, resides in Oak Lawn, IL.
Irene went to work in downtown Chicago upon completion of a business training course after high school. Chicago and its amenities remained a lifelong love of Irene's. Not long after World War II, she met her future husband William LaVern Haglund and they were married in Chicago on November 6, 1948. They would settle in the Chicago area and remain there until her husband's death in June, 1978. A dedicated homemaker most of her life, Irene worked outside the home at Capital Federal Savings and Loan in Evergreen Park, IL from the late 1970s until her retirement in 1987. In 1987, Irene relocated to Enterprise where she resided close to her son, Bill and his family.
While living in Enterprise, Irene was a member of St. John Catholic Church. For many years she enjoyed traveling with family, friends, and senior groups. Irene was an avid swimmer, walker, and shopper but her favorite activities always involved her family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. John Catholic Church Building Fund, 123 Heath Street, Enterprise, AL 36330 or the Gentiva Hospice, 1219 Rucker Blvd., Enterprise, AL 36330.
A funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Gregory Okorobia at St. John Catholic Church at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, June 5, 2012. Burial will be at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery in Alsip, IL.
