Wiregrass Hispanic Community Speaks Out Against Immigration Law

By: Jamiese Price
Updated: March 29, 2012

Marie is a 15-year-old student at Eufaula High School and instead of enjoying her spring break this week she's worried that her family may be deported.

"You have to be thinking whether you're stopped on the street and nobody will ever hear from you until you're sent back to the country you're from. That puts a lot of pressure on everybody because you feel like you're being watched every step of the way," said Marie.

After months of staying quiet, Marie and other Hispanics in the Wiregrass are finally speaking out against Alabama's new immigration law. The community is planning a rally for Friday night so their voices can be heard. The rally is an effort to get lawmakers to repeal the law.

The rally starts at 6:30 pm and will continue until 12am. The rally will be held at the China Star Restaurant on Montgomery Highway.
