As the economy gets better, the construction industry is seeing a greater need for workers. "The skilled workers are getting older, and there is a concern about getting new workers in and getting them trained to do the positions we need them to do in this industry," said Mike Lewis, the president of Lewis Construction Company.

Dothan has seen a slight increase in growth over the last few years, and city officials believe the trend will continue. "It is continuing to build and build. People are coming to the planning commission trying to set themselves up to build in the future," said Todd McDonald, the planning director for the city.

But as the city grows, the number of construction workers needed grows too. The industry is predicting many retirements over the next year. "The industry makes a lot of people retire early. They have physical hindrances from the long hours and the cold," said Lewis.

The Associated General Contractors of Alabama is being proactive. They are trying to use a "Go Build" marketing campaign to increase interest in the field for the next generation. "They still need more people that are willing to go out there and enroll in those courses because this is a real need in this industry, and this is a really important industry," said Lewis.

The construction industry sees an average of over 2,800 job opportunities each year in Alabama alone.
