Alarms and Safety

Every year, there are over three thousand fire-related deaths in homes across America.

Smoke, fire, and carbon monoxide alarms are affordable products that can alert you in the event of an emergency. In fact, The National Fire Protection Association recommends that you install one smoke detector outside each bedroom and on all levels of your home.

These products can easily be installed on walls and ceilings, and are available in a wide variety of models, sizes, and prices. Some models detect only smoke and fire, while others detect the presence of carbon monoxide. Certain models even feature voice alarms that alert you if smoke or CO is detected.

There are other products available that can assist you with fire safety. Small, directional, plug-in lights, which turn on when it gets dark, can illuminate safe paths out of the home. Fire extinguishers and safety ladders are two other examples of potentially life-saving products.

Finally, it’s essential that your family develops and practices an escape plan in the event of fire. Also, test your alarms regularly, and change the batteries in them twice a year. A good reminder is to change the batteries when you set your clocks forward and backward every year.
