Updated: August 14, 2011
Two Alabama Organ Center employees are off the job tonight after allegations of financial misconduct. Sources tell ABC 33/40 that those two employees are the director and associate director of the organization. ABC 33/40 has confirmed that the FBI is investigating a financial matter involving two employees at the Alabama Organ Center. The FBI will not discuss the details surrounding the investigation, nor will the U.S. Attorney's office. However, the U.S. Attorney's office did say a warrant containing details on the matter could be unsealed as early as Friday, August 12, 2011. The Alabama Organ Center is a non profit. A UAB foundation runs the organization. UAB spokesperson Dale Turnbough released a statement about the investigation. She said, "The Alabama Organ Center determined that two of its employees had an improper financial relationship with a vendor. The AOC severed ties with the vendor and dismissed the two employees. Their misdeeds had nothing to do with tissue and organ donation and allocation; every protocol, including consent, was followed correctly. This has not interrupted organ and tissue-donation. UAB says it is cooperating with the FBI's investigation.
