Community Briefs For March 21, 2011

By: Stephen Crews
Updated: March 20, 2011
National Day Of Prayer Service
The National Day of Prayer will soon be here. This year's date is Thursday, May 5, 2011 and the theme is “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God … (Psalms 91:2.)”

The program will take place at Stringer Street A.M.E. Church, 1900 Stringer Street, Dothan from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.  The Salvation Army and the Stringer Street A.M.E. Church are co-sponsoring this event.

Mayor Mike Schmitz will be our guest speaker and Lady Gospel plans to be in attendance.  We invite you to come join in prayer with us for our nation, state, county, city, churches, and fellow man.

A free to-go bag lunch of homemade chicken salad sandwiches, potato chips, fruit and bottled water will be available after the program.

Kick Butts Day
The grassy areas surrounding 355 N. Oates Street in Downtown Dothan will take on a new look Wednesday, March 23 when 820 crosses will be placed by the Youth Council of the Dothan-Houston County Substance Abuse Partnership’s Prevention Project to serve as a reminder to citizens of the 820 people who die in Alabama each year from second-hand smoke from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

“We are looking to make a powerful statement,” says Judy Guilder, tobacco grant manager for DHCSAP. “Our youth council has become extremely involved the past year in taking a stand against the deadly effects of tobacco and tobacco by-products. Every year 820 people die in Alabama from diseases caused by exposure to second-hand smoke. One death is too many, but 820 are simply unacceptable.”

Leading up to the event the youth have constructed small wooden crosses to be placed in the high-traffic area of downtown. “We selected our office location because it is such a high traffic area,” Guiler says. “We are situated right along one of the main thoroughfares for the city, next to the main Post Office, and adjacent to our government offices. It is our hope that people will notice what is going on and ask questions. The kids are prepared to answer any question on second-hand smoke dangers – and the dangers associated with tobacco.”

In addition to the crosses, an information booth will be set up for anyone interested in learning more about the dangers of tobacco, second-hand smoke, and tobacco-related illnesses.
