Alabama Senate Votes To End DROP Program

By: Stephen Crews
Updated: March 8, 2011
The Alabama Senate voted 23-12 to prohibit new participation in the Deferred Retirement Option Program after April 1, 2011.

Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh is the sponsor of the bill. He believes that the state can't afford the program any longer.

Senate minority leader Roger Bedford led the arguments against doing away with the program. Bedford believes that a reasonable amount of time should be allotted for some considering the program to be able to join in.

DROP is an opportunity where teachers and state employees that are 55 years of age or older and who have 25 years of service to continue working while also drawing retirement pay. The retirement pay goes into an interest-earning account, and the employee gets the money in a lump sum when they do retire.
