Two Dead In Mulga Shootings

By: Stephen Crews
Updated: March 6, 2011

"I've lived here all my life," George Williamson said. "I was smoking a cigarette and I heard gunshots."

Williamson first thought it was someone shooting at stray dogs in his neighborhood. But when he walked towards where the shots were coming from he knew something was wrong.

"I thought it was a dog...but it was a human being," he said. "The next thing I know...here comes the [Sheriff's Department] coming up the road and there was two dead bodies in the road."

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department two black men, who are still unidentified, were found dead. One was in the road, the other was just outside the house at 315 First Avenue in Mulga.

Police say it appears the two men were taken to the house by unknown suspects and before getting inside the vacant home, the two men tried to escape...and were shot. According to sources and witnesses the two men were also believed to have been bound and gagged.

Neighbors say they're shocked.

"I didn't think I'd wake up this morning and see a dead body up there," Cody Hallford said.

And while a motive has not been pinpointed, Williamson says he might have a good idea.

"I don't know if it was drug related, or what...it's just the way this community is," Williamson said.

But he says he's had enough and is ready to find a new home, elsewhere.

"I've got two little nephews that live right here with me," he said. "This is supposed to be a good community and this is the first time anything like this has ever happened."

The Sheriff's Department is still investigating.
