Glenn Crumpler is the director of Cattle For Christ International- a ministry which combines agricultural assistance with missionary work. He is using a method known as embryo transfer to produce multiple calves from one cow in a year- usually one cow can bear only one calf a year.
But with embryo transfer the mama cows are given a hormone which causes them to super-ovulate and produce multiple embryos. The embryos are then taken from those donor cows and put in recipient cows, or surrogate mothers. It's an expensive process, but in this case the embryologists donated their time and talent to the ministry.
On Wednesday Crumpler said, "We collected 52 embryos from 5 cows today."
