More Complaints Of Telephone Scams Being Reported

By: Stephen Crews
Updated: January 6, 2011
Over the past few weeks, the Bonifay Police Department has seen an increase in telephone scam complaints. The best defense against telephone scams is educating the public to not release any personal information over the phone.

Thankfully, none of the recent complainants gave out any of their personal or banking information.

Also, do not allow these callers to talk you into wiring money, cashing checks or forwarding packages. These scams are constantly changing and the public needs to stay informed on the latest approaches these scammers are using in their schemes.

The most recently reported incidents were calls from individuals claiming to be affiliated with AARP, Capital One Credit, and American Cash Awards. All of which were scammers attempting to prey on unsuspecting people. Improvements in technology allow these individuals to “spoof” telephone numbers, which allows them to put any number they want to show up on “Caller ID” service. Please stay informed and if you have any questions about suspicious activity, call your local law enforcement agency.
