Boating Accident Claims The Life Of Wewahitchka Man

Gulf County officials are still trying to figure out how a Wewahitchka man died in a boating accident on Christmas Eve.

Stan Kirkland with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says 62-year-old Tony Ronald Turner was boating in the Apalachicola River, where it intersects the Florida River.

The FWC says Turner was last seen at around 2pm Friday.  Tuner’s girlfriend called 911 when he never came back home.

Wewa Search and Rescue went looking for him around 7pm that same day.  They found Turner caught up in a tree top.  His 14 foot boat had impacted the bank.

Turner was taken to the Gaskin Landing boat ramp, where he was evenutally pronounced dead Friday evening.

The FWC says it appears Turner hit something and was thrown from his boat, but that has not been confirmed.

Turner’s body was transported to Bay County.  An autopsy is set for Monday.
