Georgia Bracing For White Christmas For Many Parts Of The State

By: Stephen Crews
Updated: December 24, 2010
A storm system moving in from the west could bring snow to north Georgia on Christmas Day, giving some locations a very rare white Christmas.

Rain and snow could begin early on Christmas Day in North Georgia. For Columbus and the Valley, it will be all rain and will likely hold off until afternoon.

Areas north of Atlanta could see measurable snow before the precipitation ends late Christmas night or early Sunday.  Up to 2½ inches is possible in the mountains according to the National Weather Service, with as much as an inch in the northern suburbs of Atlanta.  Columbus may see a brief changeover to snow Saturday night, but no accumulation is expected.

The last time measurable snow fell in Atlanta on Christmas Day was in 1882, when one-third of an inch of snow blanketed the city.  The only time any snow has fallen on Columbus CHristmas Day was in 1970 when a trace was reported.
