Riley Awards Grants To Fight Violence and Drug-Related Crimes

Gov. Bob Riley has awarded $1.86 million to combat illegal drugs and drug-related violent crime in Alabama.
The funding will support a number of multi-jurisdictional drug and violent crime task forces and a criminal information clearinghouse. The task forces conduct undercover operations to arrest and prosecute drug offenders, find and dismantle dangerous methamphetamine laboratories and assist with other violent crime investigations.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the following grants with funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice:
• $305,390 to the city of Anniston for the Calhoun/Cleburne County Drug and Violent Crime Task Force.
• $320,000 to the Talladega County Commission for the county Drug and Violent Crime Task Force.
• $296,949 to the Shelby County Commission for the county Drug Enforcement Task Force.
• $285,000 to the DeKalb County Commission for the Drug and Major Crimes Task Force.
• $165,000 to the Pickens County Commission for the 24th Judicial Circuit Violent Crime Task Force. The circuit includes Fayette, Lamar and Pickens counties.
• $140,184 to the Pike County Commission for the 12th Judicial Circuit Drug and Violent Crime Task Force. The circuit includes Coffee and Pike counties.
• $128,832 to the Chambers County Commission for the county Multi-jurisdictional Drug Task Force.
• $127,250 to the Walker County Commission for the county Narcotics Enforcement Team.
• $85,000 to the Dale County Commission for the Southeast Alabama Violent Crimes/Narcotics Criminal Intelligence Program. The program collects and distributes criminal intelligence information on violent crimes, drug dealers and child predators for use by law enforcement officials in Barbour, Bullock, Coffee, Covington, Dale, Geneva, Henry, Houston and Pike counties.
• $7,950 to the Randolph County Commission to purchase a drug-detecting canine for use by the area drug task force and other area law enforcement agencies.
