US Pipe Strike May End Soon

By: Stephen Crews
Updated: December 13, 2010

Hundreds of U.S. Pipe workers in Bessemer may soon go back on the job. They went on strike earlier this month after union workers rejected a contract then offered by the company. But now, union workers have approved a new contract proposal by a vote of 76 to 44.

Ken Carter says there are no real changes from the previous contract, but with management threatening to fire the workers if they didn't go back to work- taking the contract was more about job security than anything else.

"I think the yes voted more then the no's because they're looking at their jobs. Like I don't have another job right now. It's all I got, I got to stick with this.. try to tough it out.

The strike started when workers were concerned about personnel moves that don't factor-in seniority.
