Republican Leaders Unanmously Approved In State Legislature

By: Stephen Crews
Updated: December 8, 2010
For the first time in 136 years, the Democrats hand the gavel over to the Republicans in a ceremonial shift of power.

In the House of Representatives, all 100 present members unanimously named Representative Mike Hubbard of Auburn as the new Speaker of the House.

Although today marked a new beginning for republicans, Hubbard magnified the purpose of the legislature, not the power of the party.

"It's not about who won or lost the election, it’s about the need for this body to fulfill two words that are so important that they appear in this seal for the House of Representatives, ‘Vox Populi’, voice of the people," said Speaker Mike Hubbard.

In a 32-to-0 vote, the senators named Senator Del Marsh of Anniston as President Pro-Tem.

Other leaders from both the House and Senate will be elected when the regular session begins January 11th.
