Howell was airlifted out from the scene Friday morning in critical condition after his sport utility vehicle collided head-on with a van. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, the release stated.

The driver of the van, Gayle Willis, 56, of Montgomery, Ala., died Friday on the way to the hospital.
