The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the Office of the State Attorney, 14th Judicial Circuit, announce the arrest today of Becky Baxley, 39, of Vernon, Fla.  Baxley was charged with grand theft in excess of $20,000.  Baxley is a former deputy clerk for Vernon, Fla.

The investigation began in September 2008 after the Vernon Deputy Clerk’s office discovered the discrepancies during an internal audit and requested FDLE’s assistance.

The investigation determined that from October 2006 to May 2008, Baxley, who was responsible for receiving water and sewer payments, would take cash payments from customers.  Baxley would then allegedly keep the cash and then zero out the customers’ balance.  The total loss was in excess of $35,000.

Baxley was terminated from her position in May 2008.

Baxley was booked into the Washington County Jail.
