Attracting Birds

The following plans are for a circular “bird garden,” below a tree. If possible, locate your garden in a spot easily viewed from a window.
TOOLS
* Rear-tine Roto-tiller
* Hammer
* 6 ft. chain
* Iron pole
* Level
* Spade
MATERIALS
* One large, thin, flat stone (approx. ‘2 x ‘2)
* One 12” x 12” flat, square stone
* Hanging bird feeder (choose from a variety)
* Birdbath
* Several berry producing shrubs, attractive to birds; such as Wentworth Viburnum and Cotoneaster. (Check with your local nursery for shrubs available in your area.)
* Wild Bird Feed
1. Till your circular garden. To till a circle, simply stake an iron pole on the center of the bed, and chain your tiller to it. Then simply walk in a circle. Do not till the very center of the bed.
2. Install the birdbath. Place the 12” x 12” square stone, on the untilled center of the bed. Make sure it is level both ways. Place your birdbath on the stone.
3. Hang the feeder. Hang the feeder over the garden, being sure not to hang it over the birdbath.
4. Place the feeding stone. Directly below the feeder, set the large flat stone. This will catch falling seed, making it available for “ground feeders.”
5. plant the “feeding trees.” Around the border of the garden, plant your berry-rich shrubs. Be sure not to block the view of the birdbath and flatstone from the window.
6. Mulch garden. This will add beauty and help reduce erosion.
