Helen Condra Drew, a resident of Headland, died early Wednesday night, Nov. 7, 2007, at Wesley Manor Retirement Center in Dothan. She was 85.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, at Headland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles W. Price Jr. officiating. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007, in Memory Hill Gardens in Bartlett, Tenn. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a.m. Saturday at Headland United Methodist Church Family Life Center. At other times, the family will be at the home of a daughter Joan Weems, 110 Melissa Lane, Headland.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Resource Center, P.O. Box 1170, Dothan, AL 36302.
Mrs. Drew was born and reared in Whitwell, Tenn., daughter of the late Walter Homer Alexander Condra and Ada Louise Barker Condra. She was a 1940 graduate of Whitwell High School where she was Valedictorian of the senior class. Mrs. Drew formerly lived in Chattanooga, Tenn., Washington, D.C., Norfolk, Va. and Memphis, Tenn., before moving to Headland in 1978. She was a member of the Headland United Methodist Church, the Mamie Stringer Sunday School Class, the Fran Vann Circle and was also a member of the Headland Study Club and the Headland Garden Club. Mrs. Drew was retired from the Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She had also been employed as a Licensed Practical Nurse at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Millington, Tenn., the McGaveny Nursing Home in Bartlett, Tenn., the LaBohner Hospital in the critical care unit and the Baptist Hospital, both in Memphis, Tenn. In earlier years, Mrs. Drew was employed as a secretary for the U.S. Department of Defense at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald E. Drew Sr., a granddaughter, Rhonda Katie Drew, and two brothers, Lancel Condra and Hilliard Condra.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Jeanette Blindauer, Mobile, Joan Weems and husband, Lynn Weems, Headland; a son, Ronald E. Drew Jr. and wife, Lynn Drew, Blakely, Ga.; a sister, Opal Pentecost, Chattanooga, Tenn.; two brothers, Hoyt Condra and wife, Theona Condra, Chattanooga, Tenn.; Judson Condra and wife, Eunice Condra, Red Bank, Tenn.; nine grandchildren, Elizabeth Hester, Heidi Fisher, Vann James, Leigh Langdon, Natalie Pickett, Nathan Clark, Jaclyn Elliott, Lynsey Drew and Angie Drew; 11 great-grandchildren.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Vann James, Jamie Weems, John Nathan Clark, Joseph White, Wayne Hester and Stuart Falkner.
