Carl Gene Shutes, 60, of South Park Avenue, Dothan, passed away Sunday evening at his residence with his family at his side.
Mr. Shutes was born on Oct. 7, 1947, in Geneva County. Carl was an Army Veteran who served during the Vietnam War. After being discharged from the Army, Mr. Shutes attended Wallace College. Mr. Shutes retired from The City of Dothan Transportation Department were he worked as a Hydraulics Specialist. He enjoyed fishing and attending Classic Car Shows, and often would enter his own 1966 Comet in different competitions. Carl will always be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved spending time with his family.
He is preceded in death by parents, Joseph Vinson Shutes and Nellie Carrine Bradshaw Shutes.
He is survived by wife, Helen Vernay Shutes (married for 20 years), Dothan; son, Michael Shutes, Dothan; two step-children, Shelia Birge, Graceville, Fla., and Buddy Berry and wife, Kim, Graceville, Fla.; two sisters, Mable McNease, Gulfport, Miss., Teresa Hall and husband, John, Midland City; two grandchildren, Garrett and Grayson Shutes, Dothan; four step-grandchildren, Virginia Adams, Cheyenne Berry, Dillon Berry and Colton Birge; one step-great-grandchild, Lainey Berry; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services with military services being held at the gravesite, will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007, in the Chapel of Kent-Thornton-Meadows Funeral Home of Dothan. Officiating will be Rev. Charles Carlton. The interment will be held immediately following the service at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Slocomb. The visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
