Delia Green Whitehead, a resident of Abbeville, died Monday morning, Oct. 8, 2007, at her home. She was 88.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007, in the Abbeville United Methodist Church with the Revs. Steven Gregg and Ernest M. Andress officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Abbeville United Methodist Church Family Life Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Abbeville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 100, Abbeville, AL 36310.
Mrs. Whitehead was born and reared in the Blackwood community in Dale County. She was a 1938 graduate of Midland City High School and later received a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education from Troy State Teachers College. She lived in Abbeville most of her adult lifetime. Mrs. Whitehead was retired as an Elementary School Teacher from the Abbeville Elementary School. In earlier years, she taught in the Haleburg, Shorterville and Union schools in Henry County and also in Crestview, Fla.
Mrs. Whitehead was an active member of the Abbeville United Methodist Church and its Irene Riley Circle, Carr-Dyer Sunday School Class and Greater Years. She was a member of the Henry County Retired Teachers Association and the Alabama Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Whitehead was very active in the local bridge clubs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Whitehead; her father, Eddie Walker Green; her mother, Rosa Bell Brackin Green; and her step-mother, Mary Wiggins Green,
Surviving relatives include three sisters, Elzola Green Brackin and husband, Cecil Brackin, Headland, Roslyn Green Woodham Hughes and husband, Joe Hughes, Dothan, Stevetta Green Slater and husband, Robert H. Slater, Dothan; a sister-in-law, Kitty Mims, Columbus, Ga.; two nieces, Cathy Garcia and Sabrina George; four nephews, Nickie Brackin, Lynn Woodham, Jerry Woodham and Andrew Slater; several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Serving as active pallbearers Nickie Brackin, Lynn Woodham, David Woodham, Jerry Woodham, Jackey T. Harpe and Stanley Brackin.
