Livingston P. Lewis, Jr., a former resident of Headland, AL, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2007 at the home of his niece, Carletta Belflower of Dothan, after an extended illness.
A memorial service will be held 4:00 p.m. Saturday, September 22, 2007 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Anderson officiating and Byrd Funeral Home directing.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial /Honor Program, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9956 or Covenant Hospice, 2855 Ross Clark Circle, Suite 110, Dothan, Alabama, 36301.
Mr. Lewis was born in 1920 to L. P. Lewis, Sr. and Ella Burt Lewis at the historic Lewis Dairy farmhouse now called “Lewis Oliver Dairy” in Northport, NY. He was raised and worked on the farm until after WWII when he began his own business “Lewis Excavating and Construction Company.”
Livy, as he was know to everyone, graduated president of his class at Laurel Avenue High School and continued his studies at Cornell University Agriculture School. He was always active in the community through the rotary club, his church and other community activities. He was quite an equestrian playing polo all over Long Island, NY with his longtime friend Dr. Fredericks. He continued playing until shortly before retiring to Alabama. Livy retired to Headland, AL where he was a member of Headland Methodist Church.
He was predeceased by three sisters, Bernice Burt, Camilla Root and Lorena Warner and by his wife, Dorothy Conklin Lewis who died on April 21, 2005.
Mr. Lewis is survived by a niece, Janice Healy Hanlon of S.C. and nephews, David Warner of Pearl River, NY and Jay Warner of Glen Rock, PA. Several great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
