Irene Snell, a resident of Newton, was called home to glory on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007, at Flowers Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was 86.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31, 2007, at Antioch Baptist Church in Newton with the Rev. Jeff Boyd officiating. Interment will follow services at Newton City Cemetery with Robert Byrd of Sunset Memorial Park Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, at Antioch Baptist Church in Newton. Flowers are being accepted and can be delivered to Sunset Memorial Park.
Mrs. Snell was born on Jan. 5, 1921, one of seven children to the late Mary and George Smith of Newton. She attended Coppersville High School in Enterprise. Irene Snell gave her life to Christ at an early age and became a devoted member of Antioch Baptist Church in Newton. She later met Kenneth Snell and was united in Holy Matrimony on Dec. 30, 1947. They had five beautiful children, one of which died as an infant, the late Kenneth Earl Snell. Irene "Memama" Snell will always be remembered as a great mom, grandma, great-grandma, and a sweet lady in the community who was greatly loved and will be missed very much.
Survivors include her loving sister, Mary Lou Johnson, whom she cherished; four daughters, Mary Warfield, Diane Snell, Angenell Johnson and her husband, Michael, Jeanette Jones and her husband, David; she was blessed to have eight grandchildren, Kimberly Detrach Doster, Shawn Fabian and his wife, Tina Doster, Felicia Leshea Johnson, Andre Omar Jones, Temika Renee Jones, Lakisha Nicole Johnson, Marcus Dewayne Johnson, Genie Marie Jones; 13 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.
Robert Byrd of Sunset Memorial Park, Funeral Home and Crematory, LLC, of Dothan, is in charge of arrangements.
