N. E. Gamble Penuel, a former resident of the Camp Springs community of Henry County, died Thursday morning, Aug. 16, 2007, in the Henry County Health & Rehabilitation Facility in Abbeville. She was 97.
Graveside services will be Saturday in the Haleburg Cemetery at 10 a.m. The family will receive friends following the services in the fellowship hall of the Haleburg Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the W.R. Chambers Multi-Purpose Center in Haleburg, 10347 G.H. Grimsley Highway, Columbia, AL 36319.
Mrs. Penuel was born in Haleburg, daughter of the late Abraham Gamble and Pet McKissack Gamble. She was reared by an aunt and uncle, George and Ellen McKissack. Mrs. Penuel lived in the Camp Springs community of Henry County most of her adult lifetime. She retired from the Henry County Board of Education as an elementary school teacher at the Headland Elementary School and later taught elementary education at Abbeville Christian Academy. Mrs. Penuel attended the University of Montevallo and in later years was graduated from Troy University.
She was a member of the Haleburg Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. Mrs. Penuel was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Columbia Chapter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Penuel and daughter, Nancy Penuel Holland.
Surviving relatives include a son, Ken Penuel and wife Ann Penuel, Fort Gaines, Ga.; a son-in-law, Rabon Holland and wife Annie Holland of Dothan; three grandchildren, Connie Thompson and husband Jimmy Thompson of Columbia, Brad Penuel and wife Andressa Penuel of New York City, Leigh Ann Penuel Chapman and husband Patrick Chapman of Portland, Oregon; a great-grandson, Mason James Chapman.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Phil Shelley, Roger Money, Ronnie Yance, Mark Oakley, Will Pitchford, Derrell Dukes, Bobby Ed Blount and Thomas Roney.
