LAWMAKERS URGING LEGISLATURE TO CHANGE PAROLE ELIGIBILITY

Prosecuters and law enforcement representaives are urging the Alabama Legislature to change state law. Under existing law, an inmate is eligible for parole after he or she has served one-third or ten years of the prison sentence. Lawmakers are petitioning the legislature to honor the intentions of judges and juries when criminals are ordered to serve consecutive sentences. Attorney General Troy king has been at the forefront of this crusade. He personally intervened to represent victims before the Alabama Board of Pardons and Appeals during his first few months in office. The call for change in law has come in the midst of National Victims Rights Week, which started on April 10 and continues through April 16th.
