ALABAMA PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE

State and National officials are announcing renewed efforts to prevent prescription drug abuse. Alabama has passed a law to establish a prescription drug monitoring program, and U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions introduced legislation that would create a federal grant to help establish or improve those programs. Nineteen states currently have operting POMP`s and an additional 24 states are actively pursuing similar programs. This legislation would authorize $95 million dollars through 2010 for state drug monitoring programs. Sessions said the ultimate aim of his legislation is to make it possible for states to share the information across state lines while maintaining patient privacy.
