MOVE AGAINST SUNDAY ALCOHOL SALES FAILS

Updated: January 7, 2009
The Dothan City Commission tackled a big controversy yesterday. Business owners and other community members showed up at City Hall to debate the hot topic of selling liquor on Sunday. A bill now in the Alabama Legislature, would allow "category-5" municipalities like Dothan, to allow for Sunday sales of alcohol, either by a vote of the people, or by an ordinance passed by the City Commission, or City Council. Dothan Mayor Chester Sowell says the bill would take away the people`s right to decide on Sunday liquor sales. Don Stanwyck, manager of Hooters in Dothan, is for Sunday sales. At the commission meeting, Mayor Sowell led an effort to pass "resolution 36", which would oppose the Sunday liquor sales bill as it is now written. The resolution failed 4 to 3.
