Updated: January 7, 2009
In his third State of the State Address, Governor Bob Riley lays out an ambitious agenda that includes reforms to government, and a balanced budget. The governor said he plans to eliminate the shortfall in the general fund, and do so without raising taxes. Reform was also a big item on his agenda. Among the accountability items he wants legislators to pass are: A ban on money transfers between political action committees, a stronger open meetings law, limited home rule, and a permanent statutory ban on pass-through pork. He also outlined some big proposals for education. Governor Riley said that all K through 12 education requests will be honored if his budget passes. He also came out in strong support of a constitutional ban on gay marriage. The state legislature will begin taking up those proposals in their regular session which convened yesterday morning.
