NEW BILL BEING PRESENTED TO HOUSTON & HENRY COUNTIES RELATING TO DIVERSION PROGRAM

Updated: January 7, 2009
If passed into law, a new bill being presented to Houston & Henry counties would give people who commit certain violations, the opportunity to pay for their crime without going to court. The District Attorney for Houston and Henry counties, Doug Valeska, met with local police departments about a bill relating to the pre-trial Diversion Program. Under the proposal, a person being charged with a violation can apply, and fees paid by the participants would go to the local police agencies. The participant would avoid having to go to Circuit Court and would receive help from a rehabilitive service provided. It would also help prevent unecessary cases from going to court. The four organizations are Southeast Alabama Child Advocacy Center, Camp Sayla, House of Ruth, and the Wiregrass Angel House. The Bill has already been approved by the Henry County Commission, and is awaiting approval by Houston County.
