SEXUAL ABUSE CASES

Updated: January 7, 2009
Keegan Nordman: The man who sexually abused a young girl in an area Walmart, was back in the Houston County Courtroom yesterday. Keegan Nordman and District Attorney Doug Valeska struck a plea bargain that will mean less jail time for the suspect, and less trauma for the victim and her family. Nordman has been in the Houston County Jail since early August after he was charged with first degree sexual assault against a minor in the Northside Walmart on August 12, 2004. Nordman was charged with the sexual assault of a nine year old girl. The girl was in the toy aisle when Nordman came up and fondled her, say police. Nordman claimed at the time he was detained, that he wasn`t sure if he would have been able to refrain from doing the same thing again. He claimed he needed mental help for his problem. The DA Doug Valeska, offered a plea bargain of eight years in prison instead of the maximum 10 years because if the case had gone to trial, the victim would have had to take the stand. The defendant agreed to the bargain as did Judge Edward Jackson. Sexual assault is a parolable offense in the State of Alabama, and Nordman will come up for parole. The DA`s office has vowed to do everything they can to keep in prison. Barry Mullins: Another sex offender was in court yesterday on a bond hearing. Barry Mullins is in the Houston County Jail accused of sexually assaulting an 11 year old on New Year`s Eve. When Mullins was picked up by police, they learned that he was out on bond for another sexual offense. Mullins also has a buglary case pending. The latest incident happened at the home of Mullin`s girlfriend, who happened to also be the victim`s Aunt. Judge Edward Jackson denied bond for this offense, and also revoked the bond for the previous offense. Dothan Police are still investigating and interviewing suspects regarding the case. The maximum sentence for a sexual offender is 10 years. Gregory James Shiver: And while two alleged sexual offenders appear in court, another local man is recently charged with a similar crime. Investigators with the Enterprise Police Department have arrested 56-year old Gregory James Shiver, on two counts of sexual abuse, first degree. One incident occurred in Enterprise, while the other took place in Dale County. On Friday morning, Enterprise Police and F.B.I. agents executed a search warrant at Shiver`s residence, located at 109 Carnegie Lane. Shiver has since been arrested and placed in jail on the two charges.
