It was a close race, but Kinsey resident Curtis Harvey should face Republican Bobby Clemmons for the vacant District 1 Houston County Commission seat.
Harvey defeated fellow Democrat Ed Vaughn with 51.3 percent of the total votes cast. There were 1, 343 votes cast in the district runoff. Harvey polled 689 to Vaughn`s 654.
The District 1 special general election is set for Janury 11, 2005.
The Houston County District One seat was held for nearly 18 years by Wylie Yelverton, who retired last August. There was two years left on his term.
Harvey is a Credit Manager for Wells Fargo Financial. He was raised in Dothan and previously sought the Houston County Commission District 1 seat. He is also an Associate Pastor at Greater Buelah Baptist Church, and served in the U. S. Army from 1988 to 1992.
Vaughn who is 70 years old, retired from the Michigan State Legislature and served as the assistant to the mayor of Detroit for ten years.
Clemmons has served on the Houston County Board of Education for 12 years, and is no stranger to local politics.
He currently works as a farm suprvisor for Lesaffre Yeast Corp. in Headland, but spent 10 years as director of the Houston County Emergency Management Agency and 20 years as operations support manager of Hayes International Corp., now known as Pemco.
Clemmons who is 61, won the Nov. 2 Republican special primary election with nearly 80 percent of the total votes cast.
