COUNTY TAKES OVER STATE LAB

Houston County Commissioners voted today to take over operations of the Dothan Branch Laboratory from the state.
The lab is used to test water samples and is scheduled to be shut down by the state this friday. The commission voting to take over operations means the lab may be reopened by the first of the year. The lab operates inside the houston county health department. If it were closed permanently all water samples would have to be sent to montgomery and many say that would make testing cumbersome.
If the county is able to hire someone to run the lab it should only be closed for a few weeks, but that means no water testing will go on in that period which could be a problem for private wells but not for municipalities who usually test at the beginning of the month.
