Representatives from Farley Nuclear Plant announced today that they have submitted an application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a twenty year license renewal. Nuclear plants can operate for 40 years and can renew their license for an additional 20 years. Today plant officials met with community leaders and asked that they get personally involved in the re-licesing effort-- by sending letters to the NRC voicing support. Plant manager Don Grissette says with community support he hopes the plant will remain in the wiregrass for the next 20 years. "I think our record speaks for its self. I think our performance in terms of safety in terms of general production and our environmental stewardship speaks very strongly. That will go a long way insuring that our license is renewed." The renewal process can take anywhere from 20-30 months. During that time the NRC will schedule public meetings for residents to voice their opinions on whether or not the plants license should be extended. Those meetings well be schedule for sometime at the end of the year.
