17-year old Meggon Lewis died when the car she was driving collided with a dump truck. The accident happened at the intersection of Columbia Highway and Omussee Road. It is a dangerous intersection that has seen more than its share of accidents. The driver of the truck, 31-year old Shawn Meadows, was not hurt in the accident. An off-duty Columbia police officer was among the first on the scene and thought he detected a faint pulse in Ms. Lewis. Paramedics attempted to revive the girl and quickly rushed her to Southeast Alabama Medical Center. She was pronounced dead a short time later by Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd. The accident remains under investigation by Dothan Police. However, officers say they do not expect any charges to be filed in the case. They say it appears and witnesses verify Ms. Lewis turned into the path of the truck causing the deadly wreck.
