Martha Roby: Perez Nomination Troubling

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Martha Roby (R-AL) reacted to President Obama's nomination of Thomas Perez to Labor Secretary Monday, calling the move troubling given the need for workforce policies that promote job growth.

As a member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, which has jurisdiction over labor laws and many functions of the Department of Labor, Rep. Roby said it is unwise and unproductive to install an extremist into such a critical position.

"Mr. Perez's history of activism is troubling, particularly his being involved with groups that have invited and instructed the flouting of our laws," Rep Roby said. "The courts have already intervened to rein in the Obama Administration's attempts to ignore the Constitution by illegally appointing members to the National Labor Relations Board. Should we expect the same politicization and willful abandonment of the rule of law from Mr. Perez at the Department of Labor?

"Of course, the President has every right to nominate whomever he wants. However, at a time when we need to be focused on pro-growth workforce policies, it is unfortunate that President Obama would choose ideology over the economy, and politics over jobs. I hope this nomination will receive a rigorous evaluation by the Senate in its confirmation process."
