James Lamar (Swifty) Cook, Sr.

James Lamar (Swifty) Cook, Sr., a resident of Abbeville, died Saturday afternoon, March 2, 2013. He was 87.

            Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, March 4, 2013, in the Abbeville United Methodist Church with Reverend Robert C. Yawn and Mr. John S. Riley officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery-East. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 11:00 A.M. Monday in the Abbeville United Methodist Church Family Life Center.

            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Abbeville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 100, Abbeville, AL 36310 or to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan, AL 36303.

            A native of Ozark, Mr. Cook was reared in Abbeville, son of the late Willie Lamar Cook and Ruby Waters Cook. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy on the USS New Orleans. Mr. Cook lived in Abbeville most of his adult lifetime.  He retired from Cutler Egg Products in Abbeville as plant manager, and in earlier years, he was engaged in farming. Mr. Cook was a member of the Abbeville United Methodist Church, a life member of the Brown's Crossroads Masonic Lodge #529, and a lifetime member of the Twilight Garden Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Syble Walker Cook, and two sisters, Frances Cook Harper and Jean Cook Hancock.

            Surviving relatives include a daughter, Jan Cook Peterson and husband, Derek, Abbeville; two sons, James Lamar (Jim) Cook, Jr. and wife, Bonnie, Dothan; Jeff Cook and wife, Leslie, Headland; eight grandchildren, Will Peterson, Claire Peterson, Haley Cook, Jameson Cook, Sarah Beth Parker, Zach Parker, Lauren Cook, and Jack Cook; a great-granddaughter, Madi Grace Hopper.

            Serving as active pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.

            The family would like to express their appreciation to Dogwood Manor Assisted Living and Covenant Hospice for the kindness and loving care shown to Mr. Cook during his illness.
