Enterprise State Community College (ESCC) celebrates Black History Month through a series of activities with the theme of Expressions of Firsts. ESCC student, Javarice Moody, wrote and directed his first theatrical production entitled Onyx that premiered as part of official ESCC activities. Moody is a black student heavily involved in theater and creative writing at ESCC and in the Enterprise Community.
"Onyx is the story of us all," said Moody. "I am thankful that the school's Black History Month activities created a venue to get the story out there, but I'm most thankful that I was able to spread the message about God."
Onyx takes place in a fictional kingdom called Wayward in approximately 72 A.D. The compelling story tells a tale of a man who loses everything. His faith is put to the test, leading him to discover that it takes living what you believe in order to make an impact on others' lives. This hour-long play features a cast of eleven actors, all current or former ESCC students, ranging from 19 to 28 years of age.
"Java had so much faith in us," said Sarah Williamson, who played the part of Camille, a servant to the King who became a love interest of Onyx. "We all have bad stuff going on in our lives, and being a part of a play with such a strong message taught us to let it all go and lean on each other. For the longest time I didn't believe in God, so I appreciate it."
Along with other cast members, Moody can be seen in the upcoming ESCC production of Oklahoma! on April 12 and 13. For more information, call (334) 347-2623 or visit escc.edu.
