Geneva County Trying To Rebuild With Little Funding

Road and bridge engineers are expecting it to cost millions of dollars to fix all of them. As of now they don't think they will receive any help from FEMA. Geneva County EMA Director, Margaret Mixon said it's putting stress on the county. "I don't know where the money is going to come from to repair all of the roads because Geneva County just doesn't have $2 million to put into road repairs," continued Mixon.

The county has received millions of dollars worth of damage from the past two floods, but the amount statewide isn't enough to qualify for FEMA funding. Geneva County Road and Bridge Engineer, Justin Barfield said with 25 roads closed, it's a matter of trying to figure out what the next step will be.

"It's going to be a prioritizing type event. We've got to go where the most people are affected; the most traffic, school buses and emergency personnel can get to and from people's houses. We've just got to do what we can, the best we can," continued Barfield.

Despite the lack of funding, the Road and Bridge Department plans to begin repairing the first road Friday,
