STARKVILLE, Miss. - Freshman third baseman Chandler Griffin drove in four runs and the pitching duo of Jaycee Affeldt and Rachel Rigney combined to slow down the Georgia State bats to pick up a 5-3 win in the Trojans' first game of the 2013 season.

Griffin went 1-of-2 at the plate with a two-RBI single and two sacrifice flies to lead Troy (1-0), offensively. In the circle, Jaycee Affeldt recorded the win, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing three runs, two earned while allowing four hits and striking out three.

Freshman pitcher Rachel Rigney picked up her first career save, pitching the final 2.2 innings without allowing a run or a hit.

Georgia State added a run in the bottom of the second, but Troy loaded the bases in the top of the third with no outs after Taylor
Smartt was hit by a pitch, Kacie McAllister reached on a bunt single and Bailey Blake reached base after a Georgia State throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt.

After two fly outs to left field by the Trojans, Griffin came through with a two-out single to left field to bring in Smartt and McAllister and give Troy a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning.

Hannah Renn's RBI single and Griffin's RBI sacrifice fly to left field extended Troy's lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth.

Georgia State scratched two runs in the bottom of the fifth by picking up back-to-back doubles to cut the Trojans' lead down to 4-3. In her first collegiate appearance, freshman pitcher Rachel Rigney shut the door on the Panthers by picking up the final two outs to end the fifth inning.

With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning, Griffin capitalized once again with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Blake and drive in her fourth run of the day, extending Troy's lead to 5-3.

Troy scattered six hits off of Panthers pitcher Kaitlyn Medlam, who pitched 6.1 innings and allowed five runs. McAllister and Renn picked up two hits apiece, while Smartt finished the game 1-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored.

The Trojans wrap up Day One at the Bulldog Kickoff Classic and face the host Mississippi State Bulldogs tonight at 6:30 pm.
