Another State Representative Changes Parties

By: Stephen Crews
Updated: February 4, 2013
Following the Monday announcement that State Rep. Richard Laird of Roanoke has decided to leave the Democrat Party and caucus with Republicans while serving as an Independent member of the Alabama House, Speaker Mike Hubbard (R - Auburn) released the following statement:

"For several years I have urged Rep. Laird to leave the Democrat Party because his political beliefs are much more conservative than the liberalism that dominates the other side of the aisle, and our conversations have intensified over the past several months.

While I respect his decision to serve the remainder of his term as an Independent, I am very happy that he has accepted my invitation to caucus with the House Republicans.  His voice will be a welcomed addition to the chorus of conservatives who are already members of the Republican Caucus.

It is obvious that the Alabama Democrat Party is suffering from a serious case of 'trickle down liberalism' in which the left-wing philosophies of President Obama and his congressional cronies have taken firm root at the state level.  As long as the Democrats allow liberals to dictate their Party's path, they will continue to hemorrhage members and lose respected public servants like Richard Laird."
