In 2012 Coffee County
and the "Alabama Department of Environmental Management" entered into a funding
agreement for $5.8 million. The money has been used to design a tire processing
plant that will shred tires into recyclable materials. This is the first tire
processing plant in Alabama and the first development in Coffee County's
Industrial Park.
Coffee County
Administrator, Rod Morgan said this plant has potential to make a tremendous economic
impact on the county, "We will have employees out there and as the number of
tires coming in increase, so will the number of employees. We hope to see it
grow over the years," continued Morgan.
The plant is located
across from the landfill in Elba and they will accept tires from individuals
and businesses. Once the plant is complete they can shred as many as
two-million tires a year.
