On February 14, 2013 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. The House of Ruth and MMOM Movement will join with activists around the world for ONE BILLION RISING, the global movement to end violence against women and girls.
ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. One billion daughters, mothers, grandmothers, sisters, wives and friends. On February 14, The House of Ruth, in conjunction with the MMOM Movement, is inviting everyone in the Wiregrass to RISE in solidarity with activists around the world as an expression of our intolerance for violence against women.
HOW TO RISE: People in the Wiregrass area are invited to gather at Justice Park from 12 p.m.- 1 p.m. on February 14. We will have music, dancers and food. However, we realize not everyone will be able to come to the park; therefore, we invite you to participate in a citywide dance party wherever you are. We are asking every radio station in the Dothan area to play Aretha Franklin's, "RESPECT" at 12: 30 and challenge listeners and the entire City of Dothan to dance with 'RISERS' around the world at that time - be it in the park, the car, or in the grocery store line.
To do this, we need your help! DJ's: ask listeners to call in and tell you where they're dancing. It's Valentines Day, so have fun with it! The goal is to raise awareness and have a good time in the process. We also need people outside of the radio industry to help spread the word. Invite your friends to the park, encourage local business owners to play "Respect" at 12:30 p.m. and share information about the event and cause with everyone you know. Help us get Dothan Dancing against Domestic and Sexual Violence. Let's rally our community to be a part of ONE BILLION RISING- an event that will move the earth and activate women and men to dance against violence across every country. Together, we will make a difference in the lives of women in Dothan and around the world.
About V-Day: V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls by raising funds and awareness through benefit productions of Playwright/Founder Eve Ensler's award winning play, The Vagina Monologues and other artistic works. In 2012, over 5,800 V-Day benefit events took place, all produced by volunteer activists in the U.S. and around the world. These activists have educated millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls. To date, the V-Day movement has raised over $90 million and brought awareness and education to the issue of violence against women and the efforts to end it. They have crafted international educational, media and PSA campaigns, reopened shelters, and funded over 14,000 community-based anti-violence programs and safe houses in Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Kenya, South Dakota, Egypt and Iraq. Over 300 million people have seen a V-Day benefit event in their community. V-Day has received numerous acknowledgements including Worth Magazine's 100 Best Charities, Marie Claire Magazine's Top Ten Charities, one of the Top-Rated organizations on Philanthropedia/ Guidestar and Great Nonprofits. V-Day's newest campaign is ONE BILLION RISING, which will culminate on 02/14/13 with a global action worldwide. For more information, visit: http://onebillionrising.org/ or www.vday.org
