Senator Arthur Orr is proposing an idea for the 2013 legislative session that would eliminate 169 ABC stores across Alabama. Senator Orr said the bill that he plans to have ready by Feburary 5th will save the state over $46 million each year.

Local representatives said they still want to do more research, but if this can cut costs for the state they are willing to back the idea."I would be willing to support Senator Orr, but keeping in mind that it must be something that makes sense for the state of Alabama," explained State Representative Dexter Grimsley.

Senator Orr said no state should be in the liquor business in the 21st century and many concur with this logic. "I have had several calls that believe the state of Alabama should not be in the liquor sales and I tend to agree with that," said State Representative Paul Lee.

Alabama is one of 18 states that still has government-run alcohol sales. If this bill is passed retail stores would be phased out by October and private companies would have the opportunity to bid on replacing each ABC store.
